Important: Domain migration should only be pursued when the long-term benefits outweigh the short-term SEO impact, or when there's a legal or strategic requirement. If you can avoid changing your domain, doing so preserves the authority you've already built.

Before migrating: preparation

Audit and preserve all existing content Migrate all high-performing content from your old domain to the new one without changing titles, URLs, or copy unless improvements are planned. Changing content at the same time as the domain makes it harder to diagnose ranking fluctuations after the migration.

Plan your site architecture Use the migration as an opportunity to consolidate duplicate pages, remove outdated content, and organize your site structure to improve crawlability. Address structural issues before the migration goes live.

Map old URLs to new URLs Keep new URL paths as close as possible to the old ones. Create a 1:1 mapping document so every old URL has a corresponding new URL ready before launch.

During migration: technical requirements

Implement 301 redirects for every page Set up permanent 301 redirects from each old URL to its corresponding new URL. This transfers ranking signals to the new domain and preserves user experience for anyone who has bookmarked or linked to old pages.

Update all internal links Update internal links site-wide — including navigation menus, footers, calls to action, and inline links — to point to the new domain. Leaving old internal links in place creates unnecessary redirect chains.

Confirm redirect handling at the server level Work with your launch team to confirm:

• HTTPS is enforced on the new domain
• Non-www to www redirects (or vice versa) are working correctly
• Trailing slashes are handled consistently

Implement redirects at the CDN or DNS level where possible for better speed and reliability.

After migration: monitoring and verification

1. Add and verify the new domain in Google Search Console.
2. Submit the updated sitemap.
3. Use the Change of Address tool to notify Google about the domain switch.

Set up Google Analytics 4 (GA4) Install GA4 on the new domain before launch to ensure continuous traffic and engagement tracking without interruption.

Run a post-migration SEO audit After redirects are live, audit your site for:

• Broken or outdated links
• Redirect chains
• Missing meta titles or descriptions
• Crawl errors in Google Search Console

Do I need to set up redirects for every single page?

Yes. Every page on the old domain should redirect to its corresponding page on the new domain. Missing redirects mean lost link equity and broken links for anyone who has bookmarked or linked to those pages.

Can I migrate content and restructure the site at the same time?

Technically yes, but it's not recommended. Doing both simultaneously makes it much harder to diagnose which change caused a ranking fluctuation. Complete the domain migration first, then make structural or content improvements once rankings have stabilized.
