Why your hero image is cutting off subjects — and how to fix it in Presence®

How to fix a homepage or page hero image that crops or cuts off people and subjects.

Overview

If your hero image is cropping out faces, cutting off people at the edges, or not displaying the full photo, the issue is almost always one of two things: the image dimensions don't match the section's display ratio, or the section's image-fit setting is cropping the photo to fill the frame. Both can be fixed — either by uploading a properly sized image or by adjusting how the section displays the image.

Recommended hero image specifications

For homepage hero sections, use the following specifications to minimize cropping:

  • Dimensions — 1920 x 1080px (16:9 ratio) or wider
  • File format — JPEG or WebP
  • File size — Under 500 KB for fastest load times
  • Orientation — Landscape (horizontal) — portrait images will crop heavily in hero sections

Tip: If your image features two or more people side by side, make sure the important subjects are centered horizontally in the photo before uploading. Hero sections crop from the edges inward on smaller screens.

How to replace the hero image

  1. Navigate to the Presence® Platform.
  2. Click Websites from the left-hand menu, then hover over your site and select the pen icon.
  3. Click Edit in the top-right corner.
  4. Hover over the hero section and click the pen icon that appears.
  5. In the left-hand panel, click the Content tab.
  6. Click the existing hero image thumbnail to open the Media Gallery.
  7. Upload a new properly sized image using Upload Files, or select one from My Images.
  8. Click Assign Selected, then click Save.

If the image is still cropping after uploading

If the cropping persists even with a correctly sized image, the section's image display setting may be configured to fill the frame rather than show the full image. This setting can be adjusted by the Luxury Presence support team.

Contact support to request that the hero section be configured to display your image without cropping. When you reach out, mention which page and section the hero image is on (for example, "Homepage hero" or "About page banner") and describe the cropping issue so the team can locate and fix it quickly.

FAQs

My image looks fine on desktop but cuts off on mobile — is that normal?

Some cropping on mobile is expected because hero sections resize to fit smaller screens. To minimize mobile cropping, keep important subjects like faces centered horizontally in your image and avoid placing key content near the left or right edges.

Can I upload a portrait (vertical) photo as a hero image?

Portrait images are not recommended for hero sections. Hero sections are designed for landscape (horizontal) images and will crop portrait photos significantly. If you need to feature a portrait photo, consider using a different element type such as an image block or a two-column layout instead.

What if my team photo has people getting cut off on one side?

If your team photo has people getting cut off despite uploading a correctly sized image, contact our support team. They can adjust the section's fit setting to display the full image without cropping — the default behavior prioritizes filling the frame over showing the entire photo.

Will changing the hero image affect my other pages?

Changing the hero image on one page does not affect other pages. Each page section has its own image setting, so updates are isolated to the section you edit.
