How to customize website navigation menus in Presence®

How to add, edit, reorder, and remove items from your Header Menu and Side Menu in the Presence® Platform.

Overview

The Presence® Platform includes two navigation menus — the Header Menu for desktop and the Side Menu for mobile. Both are managed through Global Elements and can be customized with single links, dropdown groups, and custom ordering.

Important: The Header Menu only appears on desktop and tablet devices. The Side Menu is the only navigation menu visible on mobile. Always add important pages to both menus so all visitors can access them regardless of device.

How to access the menu editor

1. Navigate to the Presence® Platform.
2. Click Websites from the left-hand menu, then hover over the site you want to edit and select the pen icon.
3. In the white top navigation bar, click the Global Elements icon (four dots).
4. Use the dropdown on the left to select the menu you want to edit — Header for desktop navigation or Side Menu for mobile navigation.
5. Click Content to begin editing.

How to add a single menu item

Use this when you want to add one page directly to the menu without a dropdown.

1. Click the + icon to add a new item.
2. Select New Item.
3. In the Text field, enter the label you want to display (e.g., "About Us," "Contact").
4. In the Link field:
   • For internal pages — select Pages and choose your page from the dropdown
   • For external links — select Links and paste the full URL
5. Click Save.

How to create a dropdown group menu

Use this when you want to group multiple related pages under one menu item.

1. Click the + icon to add a new item.
2. Select New Group.
3. In the Text field, enter the group title that will display in the menu (e.g., "Services," "Resources").
4. Click the white bar or + icon to add sub-menu items.
5. Enter the Text and Link for each sub-item — select Pages for internal pages or Links for external URLs.
6. Click the + icon to add more sub-items and repeat as needed.
7. Click Save.

How to reorder menu items

Click and hold the six-dots icon to the right of the item you want to move, drag it to the desired position, and release. Items at the top of the list appear first in the menu.

How to remove a menu item

Hover over the item and click the trash can icon. Confirm the deletion if prompted.

Note: Removing a menu item does not delete the page — it only removes the link from the navigation menu.

How to save your changes

Click Save in the top-right corner. Menu changes go live on your website immediately.

Troubleshooting

Changes not appearing on the live site

• Clear your browser cache — your browser may be showing a cached version
• Try an incognito or private browsing window — this bypasses cached data
• Confirm you edited the right menu — Header Menu only appears on desktop and tablet; Side Menu only appears on mobile. If you're testing on the wrong device you won't see your changes
• Verify you clicked Save — return to Global Elements and confirm your changes are still there

Some menu items aren't editable

Certain pre-configured menu items — such as built-in tabs like "Let's Connect" — have special functionality tied to your website template and may not be fully editable. If you need to link a different page or form, create a new menu item with the correct link and remove the original pre-configured item.

Tips for effective navigation menus

• Add important pages to both menus — mobile visitors rely entirely on the Side Menu. If a page isn't in the Side Menu, mobile visitors can't find it
• Keep main menu items to 5–7 — too many items overwhelms visitors and makes the menu harder to scan
• Use clear, familiar labels — stick to terms visitors expect: About, Contact, Services, Blog. Avoid creative names that might confuse
• Use dropdown groups for related pages — group service pages, neighborhood pages, or resource pages together rather than listing them all at the top level
• Order by importance — put your most important pages first
• Update menus when adding new pages — don't leave new pages unlinked in navigation

FAQs

What's the difference between the Header Menu and Side Menu?

The Header Menu appears across the top of your website on desktop and tablet devices. The Side Menu appears on mobile devices, accessed by tapping the hamburger icon. Mobile visitors only see the Side Menu — the Header Menu is not visible on mobile.

Does removing a menu item delete the page?

No. Removing an item from the navigation menu only removes the link — the page itself remains on your website and can still be accessed via direct URL. To delete a page entirely, you need to do that separately in the Website Builder.

Can I have different links in the Header Menu and Side Menu?

Yes. The Header and Side Menus are configured independently. You can have different items, labels, or ordering in each. That said, keeping them consistent ensures visitors have the same experience on desktop and mobile.

Can I rename a menu item without changing the page it links to?

Yes. Click on the menu item and update the Text field — this changes only the display label in the navigation, not the page or URL it links to.

Why aren't Neighborhoods or Blog pages working on my agent subdomain?

Certain page types — including Neighborhoods and Blog Detail pages — are not supported on agent subdomains. If you want to link to these pages from a subdomain, use a redirect to point visitors to the equivalent page on your main brand website. See [How to create page redirects in Presence®].
