How to set a canonical URL in Presence®

How to specify a preferred URL for a page to consolidate SEO value and prevent duplicate content issues.

Overview

A canonical URL tells search engines which version of a page should be indexed and ranked when multiple URLs display similar or duplicate content. By default, each page in Presence® references itself as canonical — you only need to change this if you have duplicate or near-duplicate content you want to consolidate.

How to set a canonical URL

  1. Navigate to the Presence® Platform.
  2. Click Websites from the left-hand menu, then hover over the site you want to edit and select the pen icon.
  3. Use the page dropdown in the top-left corner to select the page you want to configure.
  4. Hover over the page name and click the gear icon, or click the three-dots icon next to Edit and select Page Settings.
  5. Scroll to the SEO section in the left-hand panel.
  6. Locate the Canonical URL field.
  7. Enter the preferred URL (e.g., https://yourdomain.com/preferred-page).
  8. Click Save.

If the field is left blank, the page defaults to its own URL as the canonical.

When to use canonical URLs

  • URL variations — when the same content is accessible at multiple URLs (e.g., with tracking parameters like ?utm_source=email)
  • Duplicate property or listing pages — when similar content exists across multiple pages
  • Landing pages with minor variations — when you want search engines to consolidate ranking signals to one primary version

FAQs

What happens if I leave the canonical URL field blank?

The page defaults to referencing its own URL as canonical — which is correct for most pages. Only set a custom canonical when you have a specific duplicate content situation to resolve.

Is a canonical URL the same as a redirect?

No. A canonical tag is a hint to search engines about which version of a page to index — visitors still see the page they navigated to. A redirect sends visitors (and search engines) to a different URL entirely. See [How to create page redirects in Presence®] for redirect guidance.
