Which testimonial element should I use on my website?

A guide to choosing the right testimonial element for your website — including available layouts, navigation controls, star ratings, and what's not supported.

Overview

The Presence® Website Builder includes five testimonial elements in different formats and layouts. All testimonial elements work on any page type, and every element lets you customize which testimonials appear and in what order. This article describes what each one does, when to use it, and what is and isn't supported — including navigation controls and star ratings. Important: Automatically rotating carousel layouts — where testimonials advance on their own without a click — are not available in the Presence® Platform. Native graphical star icons are also not supported. Four of the five elements include previous/next arrow navigation, allowing visitors to cycle through testimonials manually.

Tip: Featured Testimonials, Testimonial List, and Testimonial Grid all include a photo field, but the image doesn't have to be a client headshot — many agents use a brokerage logo or review-platform logo (like Google or Zillow) in that spot instead of an actual client photo.

Featured Testimonials

A curated display of hand-selected testimonials that shows one testimonial at a time with previous/next arrow navigation. Includes a photo field — commonly a client photo, brokerage logo, or review-platform logo. Use on your homepage hero section or other prominent areas where you want to spotlight your strongest reviews one by one.

Featured Testimonials with Initials

The same curated, one-at-a-time display as Featured Testimonials, but showing client initials instead of a photo or logo. Use when you want the Featured Testimonials format but don't want an image displayed at all.

Testimonial List

A vertical list format that displays multiple testimonials at once in a single-column stack, with previous/next navigation to cycle through more. Includes a photo field — commonly a client photo, brokerage logo, or review-platform logo. Use when your testimonials are longer and more detailed — list format gives each review more space than a grid.

Testimonial List with Initials

A vertical list format that displays multiple testimonials at once using client initials instead of a photo or logo, with previous/next navigation to cycle through more. Use when you want a text-focused presentation with no image at all.

Testimonial Grid

A grid layout displaying multiple testimonials at once with client names, a photo or logo image, and quotes in a clean multi-column format. Use on your homepage or a dedicated testimonials page when you have shorter quotes that work well in a side-by-side layout. This is the only element without previous/next navigation.

FAQs

Do all testimonial elements include previous/next navigation?

Four of the five elements include previous/next arrow navigation — Featured Testimonials, Featured Testimonials with Initials, Testimonial List, and Testimonial List with Initials. Testimonial Grid is the only element without navigation controls. None of the navigation buttons open a new page — they cycle through testimonials within the element itself.

Can I control which testimonials appear and in what order?

Yes. Every testimonial element lets you choose which testimonials to display and customize their order — this is done directly in the element's own settings panel in the Website Builder, not from Content → Testimonials in the CMS. Open the testimonial element on your page and toggle on Select testimonials to hand-pick and reorder specific testimonials. What's the difference between elements that show one testimonial at a time and those that show multiple?

Featured Testimonials and Featured Testimonials with Initials display one testimonial at a time — visitors use the previous/next arrows to move between them. Testimonial List, Testimonial List with Initials, and Testimonial Grid display multiple testimonials at once, giving visitors a broader view of your reviews in a single glance.

Can I display star ratings on my testimonials?

The Presence® Platform does not support graphical star icons as a native testimonial field. You cannot add a clickable or visual star rating widget to a testimonial element. However, you can include star references as text in the testimonial body — for example, writing "⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐" or "5/5 stars" directly in the testimonial text. To do this, navigate to the Presence® Platform, click Content to expand the submenu, then select Testimonials. This text will display as part of the quote when the element renders on your page.

Is an automatically rotating carousel layout available?

No, an automatically rotating carousel layout is not available. Automatically rotating carousel layouts — where testimonials advance on their own without a click — are not available in the Presence® Platform. However, four of the five elements include previous/next arrow navigation so visitors can cycle through testimonials at their own pace. If you want to display multiple testimonials in a condensed space without navigation, Testimonial Grid is the closest alternative.

Can I show a 3-up or multi-column testimonial display?

The Testimonial Grid element displays testimonials in a multi-column format. The exact column count and spacing depend on your theme and the number of testimonials you have. You cannot manually set the number of columns.

What's the difference between Testimonial Grid and Testimonial List?

Testimonial Grid displays testimonials in a multi-column layout — better for shorter quotes — and does not include previous/next navigation. Testimonial List displays testimonials in a vertical single-column stack — better for longer, more detailed reviews — and includes previous/next navigation to cycle through more.

When should I use initials instead of a photo or logo?

Use an initials-based element — Testimonial List with Initials or Featured Testimonials with Initials — when you'd rather not display any image at all, whether that's because clients prefer privacy, you don't have a photo or logo you want to use, or you prefer a cleaner, text-focused presentation.

What's the difference between Featured Testimonials and Testimonial Grid?

Featured Testimonials lets you hand-pick which testimonials appear and shows them one at a time with previous/next navigation — use it when you want to control exactly which reviews visitors see, typically on your homepage. Testimonial Grid displays multiple testimonials at once in a grid — use it on a dedicated testimonials page where showing a broader collection makes sense.

Can I use testimonials from Zillow or Google on my website?

Yes, but you must get written permission from the client first, then manually enter the testimonial by navigating to the Presence® Platform, clicking Content to expand the submenu, and selecting Testimonials. Do not copy reviews without permission.

How many testimonials should I display on a page?

It depends on the page and element. A homepage typically shows 3–6 featured testimonials to give visitors a quick sense of social proof. A dedicated testimonials page can display 10–20 or more.
