Overview

On mobile devices, visitors can only see the Side Menu — the hamburger menu accessed by tapping the three horizontal lines on your site. The Header Menu that appears across the top of your website on desktop is completely hidden on mobile.

This means your Side Menu isn't just a secondary navigation option — for most of your visitors, it's the only way to get around your site.

Why mobile navigation matters more than desktop

Most real estate website traffic comes from mobile devices. A visitor browsing listings, looking up an agent, or trying to contact you is more likely to be on a phone than a laptop. If important pages aren't in your Side Menu, mobile visitors simply can't find them — no matter how well your desktop navigation is set up.

A poorly configured Side Menu means:

• Visitors can't find your contact page and leave without reaching out
• Buyers can't get to your property search or listings
• Your blog, testimonials, and neighborhood guides go unread on mobile

What makes a good mobile Side Menu

It includes everything that matters. Any page in your Header Menu should also be in your Side Menu. Mobile visitors can't see the Header Menu — if a page is only there, it's effectively invisible on mobile.

It uses short, clear labels. Mobile screens have limited horizontal space. Long menu labels get cut off or wrap awkwardly. Aim for one or two words per menu item — "About," "Listings," "Contact," "Blog" — rather than full phrases.

It uses dropdown groups for organization. If you have more than 5–6 pages to link, use dropdown groups to keep the main menu scannable. For example, group "Buyer Services," "Seller Services," and "Relocation" under a single "Services" dropdown rather than listing them all at the top level.

It's ordered by what mobile visitors need first. Mobile visitors often have high intent — they're looking for something specific. Put your most action-oriented pages near the top: property search, contact, listings. Save secondary pages (about, blog, team) for lower in the menu.

A practical starting order for most agents:

1. Home
2. Search / Listings
3. Contact
4. About
5. Blog or Neighborhoods
6. Team (if applicable)

Common mobile navigation mistakes

Forgetting to mirror your Header Menu. Every time you add a page to your Header Menu, check whether it should also be in your Side Menu. It's easy to add a new page to desktop navigation and forget that mobile visitors have no way to reach it.

Using the same long labels as desktop. Desktop menus have more room. What reads fine as "Search Available Properties" on desktop may be truncated or awkward on a mobile screen. Shorten labels for the Side Menu specifically.

Too many top-level items. A Side Menu with 10+ top-level items is overwhelming on a small screen. Use dropdown groups to organize related pages and keep the main level to 5–7 items maximum.

Not testing on an actual device. Browser developer tools give you a rough approximation of mobile layout, but testing on a real smartphone is the most reliable way to verify your menu looks and behaves correctly. Check that items are easy to tap, the menu scrolls if needed, and dropdowns expand correctly on touch screens.

How to test your Side Menu on mobile

After making changes to your Side Menu:

1. Open your website on a smartphone (use a personal device or ask a team member)
2. Tap the hamburger icon to open the Side Menu
3. Check that all expected items appear
4. Tap each menu item to confirm it links to the correct page
5. Test any dropdown groups — tap the group title and confirm sub-items expand correctly
6. Verify the menu is easy to scroll if you have many items

If you're testing from a desktop browser, use Chrome's device emulation tool (press F12 → toggle device toolbar) for a rough preview — but always verify on a real device before finalizing.

FAQs

Why can't mobile visitors see my Header Menu?

The Header Menu is designed for desktop and tablet screens only. On mobile devices, Presence® hides the Header Menu and shows the Side Menu instead. This is standard behavior for responsive websites — mobile screens are too narrow for a full horizontal navigation bar.

A page is in my Header Menu but mobile visitors can't find it — why?

How many items should my Side Menu have?

Aim for 5–7 top-level items. If you have more pages to include, use dropdown groups to organize related pages rather than adding everything to the top level. A long list of top-level items is harder to scan and navigate on a small screen.

Should my Side Menu match my Header Menu exactly?

Not necessarily — but all important pages in your Header Menu should also be in your Side Menu. You may want to use shorter labels in the Side Menu than on desktop, and you might prioritize differently based on what mobile visitors are most likely to need.

My Side Menu changes aren't appearing on my phone — what should I do?
