Optimizing Website Images: Best Practices for Quality & Performance

What are the recommended image specifications for my website?

File formats, dimensions, and file size targets for every image type on your website.

Important: This feature is only available on desktop. It is not accessible through the Luxury Presence Mobile App.

Overview

The Presence® Platform does not include a built-in tool to crop or resize images, and it does not automatically resize or compress images you upload. Always prepare images at the correct dimensions and file size before uploading using any image editing tool — oversized or incorrectly sized files will slow down your website.

Optimization workflow

For every image you upload:

Choose the right dimensions based on where the image will be used (see table below)
Resize to those exact dimensions
Compress to meet the file size target
Rename the file with a descriptive name (e.g., "downtown-seattle-loft-kitchen.jpg")
Upload to the Presence® Platform
Add alt text after uploading for accessibility and SEO

Recommended dimensions and file sizes by image type

Image type	Dimensions	Aspect ratio	Format	Quality	File size target
Page opening / hero images	1920 x 1200px	16:10	JPEG	80–90%	Under 500 KB
Property listing photos	1920 x 1200px	16:10 or 3:2	JPEG	85–90%	Under 500 KB
Blog post featured images	1920 x 1200px	16:10 or 16:9	JPEG	80–90%	Under 400 KB
Media Gallery images	1920 x 1200px	16:10	JPEG	80–90%	Under 400 KB
Agent headshots (high-res)	1500 x 1500px	1:1 (square)	JPEG	85–90%	Under 300 KB
Agent headshots (lightweight)	300 x 300px	1:1 (square)	JPEG	85–90%	Under 50 KB
Video gallery thumbnails	413 x 245px	16:9	JPEG	85–90%	Under 100 KB

Note: These dimensions are recommended, not required. Images that don't match will still upload and display, but using the recommended sizes ensures optimal layout, sharpness, and load speed.

Recommended file formats

Format	Best used for
JPEG (.jpg)	Photos, property images, agent headshots — recommended for most images
PNG (.png)	Logos and graphics requiring a transparent background
SVG (.svg)	Logos and simple vector icons — scales perfectly at any size
WebP (.webp)	Any image where maximum compression without quality loss is needed
GIF (.gif)	Simple graphics or small animated elements only

Key rule: Use JPEG for photos. Use PNG only when you need transparency. Use SVG for logos.

Recommended tools

Resizing: Image Resizer (imageresizer.com), Canva, Adobe Photoshop, Preview (Mac), Paint (Windows)

Compression: TinyPNG (tinypng.com), Squoosh (squoosh.app), Canva

Target compression settings: JPEG at 80–90% quality. PNG using TinyPNG's automatic compression. WebP at 80–85% quality.

FAQs

Does the Presence® Platform automatically resize or compress images?

No. The platform does not resize or compress images on upload. If you upload a 5 MB camera file, it will be served at that size and will slow down your website. Always resize and compress before uploading.

Are these dimensions required or just recommended?

Recommended. Images that don't match these dimensions will still upload and display, but using the recommended sizes ensures optimal layout, sharpness, and load speed.

What size should my hero or opening image be?

Upload at 1920 x 1200px, JPEG format at 80–90% quality, and compress to under 500 KB. This is the recommended size for full-width background images at the top of pages.

What size should my agent headshot be?

Use 1500 x 1500px for high-resolution displays (under 300 KB) or 300 x 300px for a lighter-weight version (under 50 KB). Both should be square (1:1 aspect ratio) in JPEG format.

Should I use JPEG or PNG for property photos?

JPEG for all property photos. PNG files are significantly larger than JPEG for the same image — only use PNG when you need a transparent background, such as for a logo.

Where can I find size requirements for logos specifically?

See What size and file format should my logo be? for logo dimensions and file format guidance.

My images look blurry after uploading — what should I do?

The source image resolution is likely too low. Re-upload at the recommended dimensions for that image type. Also check that the JPEG quality wasn't set too low — use 80–90% quality, not lower.

What's the maximum file size I should upload?

Aim to stay under 500 KB for large images like hero images and property photos, under 400 KB for blog images, under 300 KB for high-res headshots, and under 100 KB for thumbnails. Images over these targets will slow down page load times.
